Overview: Summer is a great time of year to engage a child in writing. Not only can it be fun, but continued writing is beneficial for the retention and further development of skills obtained during the school year. The following writing prompts are specific to summertime and aim to entice even reluctant writers.

Recommended Grade Level(s): Kindergarten, First, Second, Third

Materials:

Snowman Summer Writing Prompt--Students are prompted to consider if they were a snowman in summer.

My Perfect Summer Writing Prompt--Students are prompted to consider what their perfect summer would look like.

Sea Turtle Writing Prompt--Students are prompted to pretend they are a sea turtle in summer swimming ashore to lay eggs.

I Dropped My Ice Cream Cone--Students are prompted to imagine that on a hot summer day they have purchased their favorite ice cream cone only to turn around and drop it. 

Summer at the Beach Make-a-Poster--Students create a poster to entice people to spend their next summer vacation at the beach.
