Lesson Overview: This Autumn Leaf Banner offers a fun activity that allows for creative expression and sensory exploration. Created as a follow-up activity to the book We're Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger.

Recommended Grade Level(s): Pre-K, Kindergarten, First, Second

Materials:

  • smocks
  • paintbrushes
  • paint (fall colors)
  • containers to pour paint into (small applesauce cups)
  • leaves gathered from leaf hunt
  • a long sheet of butcher paper

Implementation:

After hearing the story, students will go on a leaf hunt to gather leaves for the banner. Next, layout the materials. Allow students, in small groups, to brush leaves with paint and then print them onto the paper. Display banner on a door, in a hallway, or near your favorite window.
