Overview: This art activity is a follow-up activity to the story The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle. After reading (or hearing) the story, students will complete the picture. This activity can be implemented using a few supplies, such as crayons, colored pencils, or markers, or elevated with paint, pipe cleaners, and yarn. You choose which level suits your class and the time you have available to commit to it.

Recommended Grade Level(s): Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, First, Second

Materials:

Optional Supplies:

  • paints (+ brushes and smocks)
  • white yarn
  • liquid glue
  • scissors
  • googly eyes (at least 2 per child)
  • brown pipe cleaners (cut each pipe cleaner to suit the length you prefer for the legs of the spider)

How to Implement:

  1. Provide a copy of The Very Busy Spider Complete-the-Picture worksheet for students to color. Prompt students to add necessary details to make the picture complete. Have a copy of the book available for students to reference.
